Surgical Treatments
Breast-Conserving Surgery (Lumpectomy)
Whenever it is safe, I perform breast-conserving surgery to remove only the tumor along with a small margin of healthy tissue, keeping the rest of the breast intact. This approach offers excellent cosmetic results. I take time to explain each step and make sure you feel informed and reassured before your operation.
Duct Excision for Papilloma
If a papilloma is located within a milk duct and causes nipple discharge or other symptoms, I can perform a microdochectomy (removal of the affected duct) or a total duct excision if multiple ducts are involved. This is a safe, targeted procedure that resolves the problem and allows for accurate diagnosis, all while preserving the overall shape and appearance of the breast.
Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy
This minimally invasive procedure allows me to check whether cancer has spread to the lymph nodes while avoiding unnecessary removal of the healthy ones. By preserving the majority of lymph nodes, I help reduce the risk of lymphedema (arm swelling) and other long-term side effects. I will clearly explain the process and its role in your overall treatment plan.
Excisional Biopsy / Removal of Benign Lesions
For benign breast conditions such as fibroadenomas, phylloid tumors or atypical lesions, I perform precise lump excision with minimal discomfort and scarring. My aim is always to give you peace of mind but also an excellent cosmetic outcome.
Mastectomy
A mastectomy is sometimes the best option when breast conservation is not possible or safe. I understand how significant this decision can be and will support you both medically and emotionally. There are different types of mastectomy, and I will help you choose the most suitable one:
- Total (Simple) Mastectomy: Removal of the entire breast tissue without reconstruction.
- Skin-Sparing Mastectomy:Preserves most of the breast skin for immediate or delayed reconstruction.
- Nipple-Sparing Mastectomy with breast reconstruction: Preserves the skin and nipple-areola complex for optimal cosmetic results when safe oncologically.
Prophylactic Bilateral Mastectomy
For women at high risk of developing breast cancer, such as those with a BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene mutation, I may discuss the option of a prophylactic bilateral mastectomy. This preventive surgery removes both breasts before any cancer develops, significantly reducing the risk up to 95%.
